Laser Shot’s Helicopter Crew – Gunnery Trainer (HGCT) is designed for training the non-pilot rated crew members in a wide variety of combat and general aviation tasks. The HGCT focuses on training internal crew drills and communications for simulated combat operations, confined space landings, sling loading, and the support of ground combat operations through two embedded training modes; virtual reality (VR) and projected scenarios. Training in the VR mode enables a crew to enter into a high fidelity virtual world enabling them to look in, around, above, and below the helicopter using virtual reality headsets. Projected scenario training enables highly accurate crew gunnery training using Laser Shot’s inert recoil training weapons and associated hardware mounted just outside the HGCT unit.
The HGCT is a helicopter hull mockup that can be resized to suit the UH-60 Blackhawk, and CH-47D Chinook airframes. Up to three Air Crewmen can be situated within the mockup, each with a VR headset. Crewmen positions are tracked in 3D space, and they view a high-fidelity virtual representation of the aircraft and the surrounding environment both inside and out. The realistic environment enables crewmen to move around the cabin and operate in the same manner as they would in the real aircraft.
Both the VR and projected scenario training modes provide state-of-the-art virtual training environments through the utilization of the advanced Virtual Battlespace 2 courseware. combined with Laser Shot’s individual and crew served laser-based training weapons enables training to be delivered in the most realistic conditions possible.
The Instructor Control Station controls all the training operations, including the flying of the helicopter through a single monitor with two additional monitors that replicate the view provided to the Air Crewmen – at all times the instructor can see precisely what the trainees are observing and where in the aircraft they are located. The Instructor Control Station enables the instructor to edit the scenario in real-time, author new training scenarios, and record and display After Action Review information from the training scenarios.

Each HGCT unit consists of a helicopter mock-up with a mounted VR gun mounted to one side of the hull. Two VR headsets provide views in and around the helicopter enabling the crew to perform their tasks as well as operate the mounted VR gun.
If the HGCT is equipped for the projected scenario training mode, a single pair of 6’ x 8’ video screens will be angled just outside the hull with a mount for a Laser Shot simulated crew served weapon such as the M240D. Projected scenario training may be set up on just one or on both sides of the HGCT.
